FAQ

What is Daruma no Gakko?

Daruma no Gakko is a 501(c)(3) non-profit parent cooperative.  We traditionally offer a multi-week Japanese cultural education program in the summer for students entering grades 1-6.  This year, we are adding a 7th grade leadership and service program. Our mission is to develop and maintain an educational program which fosters an appreciation of Japanese American culture.

Can you describe the curriculum?

The goal of the program is to help build strong positive self-images and identities through learning and engaging in the study of Japanese and Japanese American history, literature, language, music, art, food, field trips and community activities.  The program is taught by California credentialed teachers based on a curriculum developed over the 40+ year history of Daruma no Gakko.

What are the hours?

The program runs three weeks, Monday through Friday, 9AM to 12PM. Other activities include Undokai (Sports Day), generally held the first Saturday after the session begins, and an end-of-the-year evening program (Gakugeikai) following the last day of school.

We offer a limited-space afternoon program from 12PM - 3:30PM.  This program is a play-based setting and is open to any child enrolled in the morning session.  Space is limited.

When do I apply?

Registration is available online only. The link to the online registration site can be found here on our website. The application process generally begins in early February, with enrollment continuing until each class is filled, on a first come first serve basis.

Who can apply?

The program is open to children who will be entering 1st through 7th grade. All ethnicities are welcome.

How much Japanese should my child be able to speak before enrolling?

None. The classes are taught in English. In a typical summer, a language teacher spends 15 minutes a day with each class. In addition, language is taught informally through cooking, songs and stories.

What size are the classes?

Classes are generally 12-15 students, although there have been occasional exceptions. The total enrollment is approximately 90-100 students. Each teacher is assisted by a teenage aide.  Daruma follows the room capacity guidelines based on our site location to ensure that students are in a safe and comfortable environment.

May I enroll my child for just part of the session?

We encourage students to attend every day of the session. Tuition is not prorated.

Does a student need to attend all years of the program consecutively?

Although the program is designed to provide a broad base over the six possible years of attendance, students may join the program at any time there is space; each grade works with standalone curriculum without prerequisites.

Do the students eat lunch at school?

Students who only participate in the morning program leave before lunch.  However, all students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to enjoy during recess and a water bottle.  Students who stay for the aftercare program have a lunch break and recess between morning and afternoon programming.

What is your cancelation/refund policy?
